Branch Trail No. 1: MASS GRAVE
You have walked past the backyard of a former wayside in at Vysokov (Wysokow), now a shop opposite the chapel, where there is a big memorial in the shape of the German landwehr (Home Guard) cross. At the cross, lie mortal remains of seven Prussian officers and forty soldiers of the 6th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 52 and 2nd Silesian Dragoon Regiment No. 8. Among those buried here is also Austrian Captain Wilhelm Ziegler from Infantry Regiment No. 9. The memorial designed by princess Victoria (the Prussian Crown Prince’s wife) was consecrated on July 12th, 1868.
You are in the place, where probably the largest mass grave from the Austro-Prussian War 1866 is located. The grave is marked out with a sandstone pyramid built by the Austrian Imperial and Royal Rails in 1875 (it stands on the left, behind the railway line). From the pyramid, the mass grave stretches under the railway line to a small cemetery with four gravestones belonging to one Prussian and two Austrian officers.
A monument dedicated to the fallen Moravian cuirassiers of Cuirassier Regiment No. 6 is also located here. It previously stood on a promontory on the right side of the Náchod–Vysokov road, having been moved there from the old road during the construction of the new route. However, due to the construction of the Náchod bypass, the monument was dismantled again in July 2024; following a thorough restoration, it was placed in this small cemetery by the railway line. The ceremonial blessing of the relocated monument took place on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
The Branch Trail continues along the paved road up the hill to the road viaduct, where it joins the Educational Trail. After meeting the yellow hiking sign, continue (following the yellow signs) across the E-67 International Highway overhead crossing to Vaclavice (Wenzelsberg or Dobenin).
Rundgang Nr. 1: Schachtgrab
